After Plunkitt lost an election to Tammany Hall the opportunity to make profit from “honest graft” all but vanished so he started looking for a job. Before he had started looking for a job he noticed that the Civil Service reformers limited the jobs available and as a consequence most young people were becoming less patriotic due to the lack of jobs. Now that he was looking for a job he got obsessed himself with the issue of jobs. In fact, he attributed having a job to patriotism. This obsession led him to use it as a campaign tool for an election and was successful in getting votes. In closing, I would say that Plunkitt’s obsession about the issue of jobs was a healthy and worthwhile because it saved a lot of young people’s patriotism to their country.
